About Us

The George Boom Funeral Home has operated under local ownership since it's founding by Maurice Burtsch in 1919.

About the same time, Dr. B. M. Banton built a beautiful large home at 11th and Minnesota Avenue for his residence and to house his dental practice. He also practiced in Yankton and eventually moved there to work full time.

Maurice Burtsch leased the Banton building at 11th and Minnesota and operated his funeral home there until the 1930's when he surrendered the building and the funeral business to Dr. Banton.

Dr. Banton then entered into a partnership with Martin Peterson who operated the Banton Peterson Funeral Home until Dr. Banton's retirement from the dentistry in the late 1930's. He then took possession, became a licensed funeral director and operated it as the Banton Funeral Home.

In 1952 Earl Sorenson purchased half interest in the business. In 1954 George Boom purchased the other half and became partner in the Banton-Sorensen and Boom Funeral Home, which became the George Boom Funeral Home in 1956.

In 1964, the funeral home moved to its current location on East 10th Street.

In the early 1990’s, the employees of George Boom Funeral Home purchased the firm. George and Faye Boom continue to have an active role at the funeral home.

Anticipating the need for a location to serve the growing communities of Brandon, SD and Valley Springs, SD, an additional chapel was built on the eastern edge of Brandon. George Boom Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services in Brandon opened on June 26, 2006.
