Clifford Merle Haviland, son of William and Angelina (Boekholder) Haviland, was born February 21, 1925, in Sioux Falls, SD. Clifford grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1943. On June 30, 1943, he entered into the United States Navy. While in the Navy he served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS DeHaven which was the first American ship to enter the Tokyo Harbor prior to Japan’s surrender. Clifford was honorably discharged on February 24, 1946.

Following his discharge, Clifford returned to Sioux Falls where he married Donna Jones on November 11, 1946. Over the next 30 years he worked as a manager for several financial companies in Sioux Falls. Donna passed away on May 1, 1981. Clifford retired from his job in the financial district in the early 1980’s. He then took a job working as a car salesman for Vern Eide. Over the next 20 years Clifford grew to love his job as a salesman and took pride in serving his customers. He married Waltraud Lambley on October 10, 1986, in Sioux Falls. Clifford retired from Vern Eide in 2003.

Clifford was a member of the Sioux Falls American Legion and Springdale Lutheran Church. In his free time he enjoyed traveling across the United States and Europe with Wally, and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all those who shared his life.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Waltraud (Wally); daughter, Stephanie Simmons, Plymouth, MN, daughter, Colleen Haviland Praus (Jim), Minnetrista, MN; son David Haviland (Alison) Plymouth, MN; stepchildren, Mike Lambley, Colton, SD, Mitchell Lambley (Laura), Portland, Oregon, Monique Christiansen, Morgantown, WV. 10 Grandchildren Alyssa Simmons, Brett Simmons, Taylor Praus, Nicole Haviland, Aaron Haviland, Ian Christiansen, Maya Christiansen, Kai Christiansen, Ariana Christiansen and Sylvia Lambley, his brother Ermal Haviland (Fidelis), Sioux Falls, sister Harriet Harris (Arnold), Chattanooga, TN; and his beloved Dachsies, Schatzie and Heidi.

As the bird free of its cage seeks the heights, so the Christian soul in death flies home to God.
