Life Legacy

Sioux Falls, SD ~ Daniel Dean Vigness, age 59, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at his home after a 3 ½ year battle with cancer. The battle is over; the victory of eternal life is won!

Memorial services will begin at 10:30 AM on Friday, February 1, 2013 at Hilltop United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. Family present visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday at Hilltop United Methodist Church with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.

Daniel Dean Vigness was born April 1, 1953 to Sylvan and Iona (Crawford) Vigness in Brookings, SD. He grew up in Flandreau, SD and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1971. He attended Augustana College and received a bachelor’s degree in both biology and nursing from Augustana. After working one year at McKennan Hospital he attended McKennan Hospital School of Anesthesia and received his Bachelor’s degree in Anesthesia from the University of South Dakota. In 1990 Dan received his Master’s degree in Anesthesia from Mount Marty College. Dan worked at Avera McKennan as a staff anesthetist and later as the Anesthesia manager for 34 years. He also provided anesthesia services on a free-lance basis to many small towns in the surrounding area. Dan served as president of the South Dakota Association of Nurse Anesthetists for three different terms, and on the board of directors, as well as serving in other capacities on the SDANA. He also served as Regional Director on three separate two year terms, Treasurer, and Vice President of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists national board. Over his 34 years as a nurse anesthetist Dan actively served in either the state or national anesthesia association continuously for 33 years! He received the 1st National Federal Political Director of the Year award in 2002 and a National award for Outstanding Service to his Profession in 2012. Dan was very passionate about his profession and was always striving to improve anesthesia services provided by nurse anesthetists. Dan’s other passions included photography, travel and his rich Norwegian heritage.

Dan married his high school sweetheart, Debbie Whipkey, on June 8, 1974 in Trent, SD. From this loving union four children were born, Jyll, Nathan, Andrew and Kayla. Dan’s wife and family were his greatest joy! Dan’s love for God was also very evident and he was currently a member of Hilltop United Methodist church where he served as lay leader, chairman of Administries council as well as serving on many boards over his years of membership.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Deb; his daughter Jyll Luettel and husband Troy and two grand-daughters, Danielle and Madelyn of Sioux Falls; his son Nathan and his wife Brooke and his grand-daughter Viera of Laveen, AZ; his son Andrew and his wife Kathy and his grandson Paxson of Chandler, AZ; his daughter Kayla and her fiancé Jesse Ratzsch and step-grandson Kessler of Sioux Falls. He is also survived by his parents, Sylvan and Iona Vigness of Flandreau, SD, one sister Carol (Marty) Engquist of SFSD, one brother Dwight (Lisa) Vigness of Billings, MT, mother-in-law Marilyn Whipkey of Flandreau, two brother-in-laws, Barry (Debbie) Whipkey of Huron and Kent (Brenda) Whipkey of Flandreau and one sister-in-law, Jodi (Brett) Ketcham of SFSD, as well as 13 nieces and nephews and 8 great-nieces and nephews, one aunt, Alma Schied of Arlington, VA, and one uncle, Leland (Mardelle) Crawford of Alleman, IA; along with eight cousins and a host of other family and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his grandparents Agnes and Ona Crawford, Daniel Vigness, and Elmer and Gladys Swenson, his father-in-law Floyd Whipkey, and his aunt and uncle, Ardis and Bob Haygeman.
